The National Centre for Biological Sciences and WWF-India are looking for a post-doctoral fellow in applied conservation genomics to lead the development of a Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) Panel for Asian Elephants with possible application for population estimation.  About the Position 

  • Duration: One year, from December 2024 to November 2025 with a provision of a six month extension 
  • Remuneration: As per existing Government of India scales

Lab: Dr. Uma Ramakrishnan’s Lab at the National Centre for Biological Sciences The position will be primarily based out of the National Centre for Biological Sciences, GKVK, Bengaluru, India with some field travel to Arunachal Pradesh and other sites. 

Required Qualifications: A PhD in molecular ecology/population genetics/evolution/conservation and a keen interest in applied conservation genetics 
  • Experience with NGS and bioinformatics analyses, and a track record of publications on genomics or allied fields 
  • Past experience with field-based sampling and working with non-invasive samples is desirable 
  • Experience in managing and analyzing DNA data using various tools 
  • Ability to work in a diverse team comprising of geneticists and conservation ecologists and managing interns/volunteers as and when required.

  • Analysis of DNA samples collected from wild Asian Elephants, SNP typing and individual identification, and spatially explicit capture recapture for population estimation 
  • Analyses of the genetic data to understand connectivity and relatedness among wild Asian Elephants in India Preparation of technical reports and manuscripts for publication
