Organizer: AI for Education
Improving learning at scale is difficult, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), due to a lack of data on children’s reading skills. One-on-one oral assessments are effective but costly and time-consuming, making them hard to scale. This limits the ability to support classroom interventions and inform education policy. Voice AI tools can help by automating assessments, reducing training needs, and making large-scale data collection more affordable. To accurately assess foundational literacy in African languages using speech recognition models, they must be trained not only on the specific languages, but also on the right voices – children’s voices, the specific task at hand - assessment, and for the relevant context - low-resourced classrooms.
At AI-for-Education.org we've been working on an innovative project to advance the field of voice AI for reading assessments in LMICs.
As part of this work, we've conducted 40+ consultations with stakeholders in the field, with the purpose of understanding the current landscape of voice AI assessments. This event will showcase our findings to the wider community, answering key questions on:
The event will also bring together three experts in the voice AI and assessments fields for a fireside chat! They'll be discussing current successes, innovations, challenges, and the path forward to ensure equitable, effective, and scalable solutions for learners.
